Строительная история, архитектура, декор городских стен Ани, известных под названиями Смбатовы стены по имени их основателя, шаханшаха Армении Смбата II Багратуни (977–989), активно исследовались в начале XX в. Т. Тораманяном и Анийской археологической экспедицией под руководством Н.Я. Марра, интересовали ученых в последующие десятилетия и вновь стали объектом пристального внимания в наше время, в особенности со стороны французской археологической экспедиции 1998–2004 гг. Сравнительный анализ результатов полевых исследований с разницей в столетие и собственные наблюдения за этим выдающимся памятником средне­векового фортификационного искусства позволили уточнить некоторые особенности строительной техники, архитектуры стен и присутствующих на них рельефов, а также выдвинуть некоторые предположения о формах завершений стен мерлонами и о характере самой первой перестройки, осуществленной византийским администратором Ани катепаном Аароном в середине XI в. Одну из ранних башен предложено отнести ко времени, предшествовавшему возведению стены царем Смбатом. Анализ архитектурной стратиграфии подтверждается в статье исследованием меток мастеров на камнях хронологически разных участков, приводится таблица этих знаков.

The building history, architecture, and decoration of the city walls of Ani, known as the Smbat’s walls after their founder, the Shahanshah of Armenia Smbat II Bagratuni (977–989), were actively studied in the early 20th century by T. Toramanyan and the Ani archaeological expedition led by N. Marr. In the following decades, the scientists were interested by this defense system, which became again the object of close attention in our time, especially of the French archaeological expedition of 1998–2004. A comparative analysis of the results of field researches with a century difference and my own observations of this outstanding monument of medieval fortification art made it possible to clarify some features of the construction technique, architecture of the walls and the reliefs present on them, as well as to make some assumptions about the forms of wall completions with merlons and about the nature of the very first reconstruction carried out by the Byzantine administrator of Ani Katepan Aharon in the middle of the 11th century. One of the early towers is proposed to be attributed to the time before the construction of the wall by King Smbat. The analysis of architectural stratigraphy is confirmed in the article by the study of the marks of the craftsmen on the stones of chronologically different sites, a table of these signs is given.
