<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article is devoted to the analysis of the remarkable carved decoration of the vaults and walls of the rock-hewn monument of the Tigray region (Ethiopia) - Wuqro Maryam Amba Sänayti. Among other elements, some cells of the vaults, through the imitation of a beam cross, are divided into four equal segments; each of them contains a small dome. This composition seems atypical for the Ethiopian tradition, but at the same time, deeply symbolic. In search of the genesis of this solution and analogies, the author of the article refers to the tradition of church architecture of the Analolian-Caucasian region, primarily Armenia. In the Wuqro Maryam church, other decorative elements are found that are similar to the traditional architecture of Christian Georgia and Armenia. In particular, rope-like moldings and bosses with a spiral relief decorating the walls of churches. The question of the possible influence of the states of the Transcaucasian region on Ethiopia remains open, but the author draws attention to a number of parallels in the decisions, probably going back to a common source - early Christian art, and, ultimately, to the tradition of Antiquity. One can assume the direct influence of prototypes that unite the traditions of two regions distant from each other, both from the world of ideas and real geographical regions that have become crossroads for the Christian cultures of Ethiopia and Armenia. Of course, Jerusalem was the meeting place for representatives of the Ethiopian and Armenian churches, but Egypt could have played an equally important role in this matter. The article does not claim to have the full answers to the questions raised; it is the “first step”, the basis for further scientific work on the study of the history of church architecture of the Christian East, aspects of inter-regional influences and the genesis of architectural forms.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>архитектурный декор</kwd><kwd>скальные церкви</kwd><kwd>христианская символика</kwd><kwd>Укро Марьям</kwd><kwd>Эфиопия</kwd><kwd>Тыграй</kwd><kwd>христианский Восток</kwd><kwd>Армения</kwd><kwd>гавит</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>architectural decoration</kwd><kwd>rock-hewn churches</kwd><kwd>Christian symbols</kwd><kwd>Wuqro Maryam</kwd><kwd>Ethiopia</kwd><kwd>Tigray</kwd><kwd>Christian East</kwd><kwd>Armenia</kwd><kwd>gavit</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">Исследование выполнено в рамках Плана фундаментальных научных исследований Минстроя России и РААСН, тема 1.1.1.1.</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Амиранашвили Ш.
