Экспрессионизм как архитектурное движение развивался в Европе в первые десятилетия XX в. параллельно с экспрессионистскими визуальными и исполнительскими искусствами. Влияние экспрессионизма проникло в Восточную Пруссию в виде сооружений «кирпичного экспрессионизма», который представлял собой особый вариант нового движения в западной и северной Германии и в Нидерландах. Первые сооружения появились в процессе восстановления городов, разрушенных во время восточно-прусской операции Первой мировой войны. Обращение к традиционным техникам и материалам строительства было составной частью программы создания так называемой «новой Германии» на разоренных в ходе боевых действий территориях. Для архитектуры «кирпичного экспрессионизма» существенным является использование творческого потенциала ремесленного мастерства, в лучших постройках заметна сильная зависимость от умения исполнителей-каменщиков. Гибридность решений, невозможность привести каждое отдельное сооружение к единому общему стилю является одним из ключевых признаков экспрессионизма в архитектуре. К сооружениям «кирпичного экспрессионизма» относятся постройки ведущих мастеров региона 1920-х гг., таких как Э. Мендельсон, Г. Хопп, К. Фрик, Г. Браш и др. Приметы «кирпичного экспрессионизма» заметны в зданиях неустановленных архитекторов (школа в Гастеллово, бывш. здание управления восточно-прусских заводов в Гусеве и др.). «Кирпичный экспрессионизм» в формальном смысле представляется трудноопределимым явлением, включающим разнородные элементы: новаторские или «левые» и традиционные ценности. Архитекторы Восточной Пруссии сотрудничали со скульпторами и обычно включали в структуру зданий пластику - круглую скульптуру, рельефы, предметы декоративно-прикладного искусства, что сближает новаторские сооружения с формирующимся стилем ар деко.
Expressionism as an architectural movement developed in Europe in the first decades of the 20th century in parallel with the expressionist visual and performing arts. The influence of expressionism penetrated East Prussia in the form of structures of “brick expressionism,” which represented a special variant of the new movement in western and northern Germany and in the Netherlands. The first structures appeared in the process of rebuilding cities destroyed during the East Prussian operation of World War I. The appeal to traditional techniques and materials of construction was an integral part of the program of creation of the so-called “new Germany” in the territories destroyed during the fighting. For architecture of “brick expressionism”, the use of the creative potential of the craft skill is essential; in the best buildings there is a strong dependence on the skill of the workers - masonry. The hybridization of solutions, the inability to bring each individual structure to a single common denominator, is one of the key signs of expressionism in architecture. Structures of “brick expressionism” include those of the region’s leading masters of the 1920s, such as E. Mendelson, H. Hopp, K. Frick, G. Brash, etc. Signs of “brick expressionism” are visible in the buildings of unidentified architects (school in Gastellovo, Management building of East Prussian factories in Gusev et al.). As examples show, expressionism in architecture, like its variety of “brick expressionism,” appears in a formal sense to be a difficult-to-define phenomenon involving heterogeneous elements: innovative or “left” and traditional values. Architects of East Prussia collaborated with sculptors and usually included elements of plasticity - sculpture in the round, relief sculpture, objects of decorative and applied art, in the structures of buildings, which brings innovative structures closer to the emerging style of Art Deco.
